Winter in the sun

Dreaming of sunny skies and gentle breezes? These tropical drink ideas will reinforce that feeling.

Azur mania

Ingredients
45 mL (1 1/2 oz) vodka
7 mL (1/4 oz) citrus liqueur (like Blue Curaçao)
60 mL (2 oz) cold tonic water
30 mL (1 oz) white cranberry juice
2 ice cubes
1/3 celery stalk
1 lime or orange slice, for garnish

Preparation
Place the celery stalk in a shaker and crush it with a muddler or pestle. Add ice cubes, vodka and cranberry juice. Shake vigorously for 8 to 10 seconds. Strain the mixture into an old-fashioned glass. Top up with tonic water. Slowly pour the citrus liqueur along the inside wall of the glass to create a layered cocktail. Garnish with the orange or lime slice.

Under a tropical sun

This charming vintage cocktail will send you to a Polynesian paradise, like something out of an old Elvis movie, complete with lounge chairs, Hawaiian pizza, flamingos, pineapple, hibiscus and ferns. So tune up your ukulele and plan meals of fresh seafood to round out the experience. The celery and white cranberry will add a touch of the unexpected to this cocktail.

Vodka from Quebec

Distillerie Mariana’s spirits have been gaining popularity for a few years now. The Mauricie-based company makes vodka, rum and gin. Its Azimut vodka is distilled from a mixture of barley and corn, and has subtle caramel aromas. Try it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail like the Azur Mania.

The lure of the exotic

You can’t get more tropical than this cheerful concoction! Sharpened by the tequila, its coconut, lime and mango flavours meld harmoniously. To be labelled tequila, it must be composed of at least 51-percent agave. Go for a deluxe version, like Patrón Silver, which contains 100 percent!

Straight from Havana

In 1932, Ernest Hemingway finished his famous novel For Whom the Bell Tolls in Havana. He was staying a stone’s throw from the legendary El Floridita bar, where he had a daiquiri prepared to his own specifications, called Papa Hemingway. Our version isn’t a Floridita original, but its heady flavours will recreate the atmosphere of the Cuban island!

Light or dark rum?

White rum is often used for cocktails, while the more flavourful amber and spiced rums are more suited for punches. Whether light or dark, rum also lends itself well to cooking and adds a delicious kick to pastries and fruit salads.
