Another aspect of American wines

Washington State wine growers continue to blaze a trail to success.

In recent years, Washington – the second largest wine-producing state after California – has achieved something so far unheard of in North America. Amid a phenomenal growth that shows no sign of abating, Riesling has overtaken Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon as the leading white-grape variety.

RIESLING RISING

It’s not an easy job to sell Riesling to American consumers. Credit must probably be given to colourful characters like Randall Grahm (who founded Pacific Rim Winery with the express intention of exploiting this grape variety) and Charles Smith with his rock-star looks and flowing mane (whose Kung Fu Girl vintage helped give Riesling a new lease on life). The wine’s fresh and generous style seems to please everyone, and makes it a particularly enjoyable companion when served with spicy Asiatic dishes.

VARIETY AND FRESH IDEAS

Today, Washington State wines are part of a diversified universe bursting with new ideas. While 20 years ago there were roughly only 100 producers, there are now more than 900 – and production has nearly quadrupled over the same period. Rhône varietals, Chenin Blanc and Sangiovese are planting a firm foothold as well.

Cabernet and Merlot production remains a central factor, however, developed with a California twist but having their own distinctive expression. The climate is a little cooler than California’s, lending these reds a more vigorous and structured profile compared to their southern relations. The result is a wine sturdy enough to be taken with rare steaks or spareribs and barbecue sauce – but with an added hint of freshness that’s more than welcome under the summer sun.
