Nomads and mobiles

Pop-up restaurants, makeshift food markets, gourmet takeouts... Everything is on the go these days, including food-and-drink production and consumption patterns.

In Barcelona, you can sip sangria while pedalling a mobile bar. In Montreal and Quebec City, office workers can lunch at their desks on gourmet fare from food trucks that pepper the city.

In Copenhagen, cyclists can stock up on special bike snacks made and sold by fast-food restaurant chains. Consumption habits have evolved – with “portability” and “convenience” being the operative words. Foodies now expect their favourite meals to come to them, rather than the other way round. All it takes is one smartphone click as you relax in your garden…

Stores are vanishing and suppliers are adapting their products to market trends. Winemakers, cider producers and distilleries now offer different packaging and formats: cans, half-bottles with screw tops and fun labels, clear or opaque containers, all in recyclable material. Transporting beverages to a friend’s house, a picnic or block party has never been easier.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PICNICS

In a “green” country such as ours, parks, beaches and waterside locations are ideal picnic spots – keeping in mind that you can’t consume alcohol wherever you please. Unless otherwise  indicated, drinking is only permitted in areas designated for outdoor meals and where there are picnic tables. Visitors should inform themselves ahead of time about drinking rules according to existing federal, provincial or municipal regulations.

READY-TO-DRINK OFFERINGS AT THE SAQ

In addition to such classics as the Bloody Caesar, mojito or margarita, distilleries now offer original beverages like Racinette Captain Morgan, a mixture of spiced rum and root beer. Note that only spiritbased cocktails are available at the SAQ. Those ready-to-drink products sold in grocery stores are malt-based.

MINI SIZES

Who says you need to drink from big bottles? There are excellent products in non-breakable smaller sizes, like Jean-Pierre Chenet sparkling white wine, famous Big House Red, and tasty SMAC cider from Quebec ciderie La Face Cachée de la Pomme. Cute and easy to carry!
