Souverain-ly refreshing!

A dry, lively California rosé? Yes, please! California has outgrown its reputation as the land of “White Zinfandel” with the help of producers like Château Souverain, which has a long and storied history.

Ahhh, white Zinfandel. Who isn’t familiar with its long reign over California wine? This brightly coloured and sweet wine was a huge hit across North America including in Quebec. Yet many things about California rosés have changed — as have whites and reds, actually.

Most Golden State rosés follow the global rosé trend of being dry and refreshing with a fruity crispness. Château Souverain’s rosé offering is an unexpected blend of Grenache, Barbera, Tempranillo, Pinot Gris and Zinfandel, and the result is a wine with a pleasing structure and refreshing notes of red fruit and a hint of spice that trends toward floralness.

California’s climate variations that exist according to proximity to the Pacific Ocean means that well-chosen growing sites let grape varieties retain their acidity and freshness — an essential one-two punch for a quintessential rosé. As a result, California winemakers get creative with varieties and sites.

A Pioneering estate

Though their original and refreshing rosé might be your introduction to this estate, Château Souverain is a stalwart of California’s wine world. In 1943, Lee Stewart was bored at his sales director job and bought some vines in Napa Valley’s Howell Mountain. In 1958, he handed winemaking responsibilities over to Mike Grgich — a fateful choice, as Grgich would go on to make wine history by winning first prize at the 1976 Jugement de Paris with a Château Montelena Chardonnay.

Today, Château Souverain continues to produce wines that reflect its founder’s vision, while maintaining the innovative spirit that guides modern California wine-growing techniques and styles. While California wines are considered “new world”, there’s no mistaking that they have a rich and intriguing history!
