TV-themed wines

For an even more enjoyable TV experience, many wineries and distilleries have begun producing wines and spirits inspired by popular TV shows. We take a closer look at this growing trend.

Saturday Night Live has its own Beaujolais, Downtown Abbey its Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Real Housewives have a whole slew of alcohol brands to their name. The trend is certainly not a new one, but it is gaining in popularity according to Pascal Beaudry from Voyou, an advertising agency specialized in agro-food marketing. “Fans get attached to the stars of their favourite TV shows, shows that sometimes air for years and years,” points out Beaudry. “Companies want to cash in on a show’s popularity, take advantage of it in order to sell associated products. Even Christian Bégin from Y’a du monde à messe has his own wine, and I wouldn’t be surprised if other Quebec artists follow suit.”

La Petite Vie

Twenty-five years after the very first episode of La Petite Vie aired in 1994, Radio-Canada is still logging surprisingly high ratings thanks to reruns on Tou.tv and ICI Télé. The show, written by Claude Meunier and starring a cast of talented actors, is now part of Quebec popular culture. In celebration of this anniversary, two limited-edition wines, one red (Château Ragoût) and one white (Le Clos de Thérèse), were launched – and warmly welcomed – in the fall of 2018.

Wine, a spinoff product?

A tasty tribute to the wine created by Réjean in La Petite Vie, Château Ragoût is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from the Pays d’Oc, located in the south of France. Clos de Thérèse, a Chardonnay from Languedoc-Roussillon, showcases pleasant acidity and exudes notes of pear, honey, and vanilla. Both products are made by La Maison des Futailles, and feature retro labels inspired by the show, complete with iconic one-liners, such as “Réserve de la boulette”, “Ti-Mélissime”, “Tellement blanc qu’on dirait qu’il sort de la sécheuse!”, etc. “These wines are likeable and fun,” describes Beaudry. “So they definitely get lots of attention!” Try them with a plate of good old pâté chinois!

Game of Thrones

The American fantasy drama aired its eighth and final season this past May. Thibault Bardet, a winemaker from Bordeaux and a huge fan of the medieval saga, has created vintages inspired by the wines described in the GoT books and series. He launched two limited-edition cuvées in late 2017: Dornish Wine, A Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux red, and Imp’s Delight, a sulphite-free Saint-Émilion red. In addition to their aromatic profiles, which were based on the descriptions in the books, the bottles and labels are stylized to match the epic fantasy world of GoT, much to the delight of fans everywhere. “We’ve noticed an uptick in derivative products manufactured as a result of pop-cultural phenomena,” says Beaudry. “Here in Quebec it’s still relatively new, but in other countries it’s already an established trend.”

Walking Dead

The Last Wine Co. launched three reds (of course!) inspired by the most popular characters on the horror series The Walking Dead. A California Petite Syrah to pay homage to Rick Grimes, a California Bourbon Barrel with notes of dark chocolate and vanilla named for Negan, and a Cabernet Sauvignon in honour of the brooding Daryl Dixon. And for all you die-hard zombie fans out there, there’s even an app you can download that brings the labels to life!
